Entrevista realizada por Chris Fernández, editor de Metal Fans Chile, a Toño Gastelum de Skeletal Throne.
Desde Ciudad Obregón, Sonora, México, Skeletal Throne ha construido una trayectoria dentro del underground extremo con una propuesta marcada por la agresividad del Death Metal y el Thrash Metal. Después de Human Deterioration y Barbaric Torment, la banda presenta Perverse, su tercer álbum, una producción en la que la velocidad, los blast beats y la intensidad del Death Metal adquieren un papel todavía más importante.
Pero detrás de la violencia sonora de Skeletal Throne existe también una realidad que ayuda a comprender el origen de esa furia. En sus respuestas, Toño Gastelum habla abiertamente de situaciones reales, violencia, odio y otros aspectos oscuros de la sociedad mexicana que forman parte de la inspiración de sus letras. Es una mirada desde el propio underground mexicano y vision, muy alejada de la imagen turística con la que muchas veces se identifica internacionalmente a México.
Para Skeletal Throne, esa realidad no se queda solamente en las letras: también se transforma en música. Como explica Toño, el Death Metal representa una manera de liberar esa “mala energía” y convertirla en algo creativo.
En esta entrevista, Chris Fernández, editor de Metal Fans Chile, conversa con Toño Gastelum sobre Perverse, el proceso creativo de Skeletal Throne, sus raíces en Sonora, la historia de la banda desde los días de Before the Kill, sus influencias, la escena extrema mexicana, sus próximos conciertos y la posibilidad de llevar su música hasta Chile y otros países de Sudamérica.
Una conversación directa y sin demasiados adornos, tal como es la propia música de Skeletal Throne.
💀Chris: Para comenzar, Perverse ya está disponible. ¿Cómo se sienten con el resultado final del álbum y qué recepción han tenido hasta ahora por parte de sus seguidores?
☠️Chris: To begin, Perverse is already available. How do you feel about the final result of the album, and what kind of reception have you received so far from your fans?
💀Toño: Así es, Perverse está disponible desde el 17 de agosto de 2026 en formato físico, bajo nuestro sello discográfico Mexican Steel Prods, y en plataformas digitales solamente en YouTube y Bandcamp. La verdad, estamos sorprendidos por la aceptación del disco en México, Europa y Estados Unidos.
☠️Toño: That's right, Perverse has been available since August 17, 2026, in physical format through our record label Mexican Steel Prods, and digitally only on YouTube and Bandcamp. The truth is, we are surprised by the reception the album has received in Mexico, Europe, and the United States.
💀Chris: El título Perverse es bastante oscuro y directo. ¿Qué significado tiene para Skeletal Throne y qué representa dentro del concepto general del álbum?
☠️Chris: The title Perverse is quite dark and direct. What does it mean to Skeletal Throne, and what does it represent within the overall concept of the album?
💀Toño: El título del disco, Perverse, tiene mucho peso para nosotros, ya que en México se viven muchas perversiones y hechos reales que hemos pasado. La misma música está creada con esa furia donde uno libera esa mala energía que es el Death Metal.
☠️Toño: The title of the album, Perverse, carries a lot of weight for us because in Mexico we experience many perverse situations and real events that we have lived through. The music itself was created with that fury, where you release that negative energy through Death Metal.
💀Chris: Perverse llega después de Barbaric Torment. ¿Qué sienten que ha cambiado en Skeletal Throne desde aquel álbum hasta el trabajo actual?
☠️Chris: Perverse comes after Barbaric Torment. What do you feel has changed in Skeletal Throne between that album and the current one?
💀Toño: En Perverse han cambiado varias cosas, como la composición, que es un poco más rápida y más Death Metal, con más blast beats y dobles más rápidos. Todo está planeado desde que inició Skeletal Throne.
☠️Toño: Several things have changed on Perverse, especially the songwriting, which is a little faster and more Death Metal-oriented, with more blast beats and faster double-bass drumming. Everything has been planned since Skeletal Throne began.
💀Chris: ¿Cómo fue el proceso de composición de Perverse? ¿Las canciones comenzaron a partir de riffs, ideas completas o fueron desarrollándose entre todos los integrantes?
☠️Chris: What was the songwriting process like for Perverse? Did the songs begin with riffs, complete ideas, or were they developed collectively by the members?
💀Toño: Perverse, al igual que los dos discos pasados, fue creado comenzando con riffs improvisados. Poco a poco se va dando forma a la canción hasta crear una maqueta. Con esa base se van creando y borrando riffs y ritmos hasta que se crea la pista final, y de ahí se crea la letra para acomodarla a la canción.
☠️Toño: Perverse, just like the previous two albums, was created by starting with improvised riffs. Little by little, the song takes shape until we have a demo. From that foundation, riffs and rhythms are created and removed until the final track is completed, and then the lyrics are written to fit the song.
💀Chris: Las letras de Skeletal Throne suelen explorar aspectos oscuros de la condición humana. ¿Qué temas o conceptos fueron especialmente importantes para ustedes al escribir las canciones de Perverse?
☠️Chris: Skeletal Throne's lyrics often explore dark aspects of the human condition. What themes or concepts were especially important to you when writing the songs for Perverse?
💀Toño: Las letras de Perverse están basadas en hechos reales y fueron escritas todas por Toño Gastelum. Normalmente son letras basadas en locuras mentales, violencia, política, religión y guerras que están presentes. Pero en Perverse nos detuvimos en las letras de guerra y nos fuimos más por el odio y las locuras humanas.
☠️Toño: The lyrics on Perverse are based on real events and were all written by Toño Gastelum. They normally deal with mental madness, violence, politics, religion, and wars that are present around us. But on Perverse, we moved away from war-related lyrics and focused more on hatred and human madness.
💀Chris: ¿Existe un concepto que conecte todas las canciones de Perverse, o cada tema fue concebido como una historia independiente?
☠️Chris: Is there a concept connecting all the songs on Perverse, or was each track conceived as an independent story?
💀Toño: Por ejemplo, “Perverse Fury”, “Madness and Sanity” y “Empty Testimony” están basadas en una misma historia que habla de lo que es capaz un ser humano de hacer: mentir, odiar, dañar, etc.
☠️Toño: For example, “Perverse Fury”, “Madness and Sanity”, and “Empty Testimony” are based on the same story, dealing with what a human being is capable of doing: lying, hating, harming others, and so on.
💀Chris: Toño Gastelum ha sido una figura fundamental en la historia de Skeletal Throne desde sus primeros años. Después de tantos años dentro de la banda, ¿cómo sientes que ha evolucionado tu forma de tocar guitarra y de componer?
☠️Chris: Toño Gastelum has been a fundamental figure in Skeletal Throne's history since its early years. After so many years in the band, how do you feel your approach to guitar playing and songwriting has evolved?
💀Toño: Siento que he mejorado en cada disco y madurado en las composiciones líricas, musicales y en la producción. Nunca se deja de aprender cada día.
☠️Toño: I feel that I have improved with every album and matured in my lyrical, musical, and production work. You never stop learning every day.
💀Chris: Antes de consolidarse como Skeletal Throne, el proyecto estuvo relacionado con el nombre Before the Kill. ¿Qué recuerdan de aquella primera etapa y cuánto de ese espíritu original permanece actualmente en Skeletal Throne?
☠️Chris: Before becoming Skeletal Throne, the project was associated with the name Before the Kill. What do you remember from that early period, and how much of that original spirit remains in Skeletal Throne today?
💀Toño: Before the Kill fue donde se supo lo que se quería para Skeletal Throne: muchos riffs rápidos, con ritmos más Thrash y poco Death Metal. Pero después de varios años descansando de Before the Kill se decidió dejar ese nombre y cambiarlo entre Malevolent Throne o Skeletal Throne, y se decidió por S.T. Nunca se olvidarán los temas que grabamos de Before the Kill, como “Temple of Possession”.
☠️Toño: Before the Kill was where we discovered what we wanted for Skeletal Throne: many fast riffs, with more Thrash-oriented rhythms and some Death Metal. But after several years away from Before the Kill, we decided to leave that name behind and considered changing it to either Malevolent Throne or Skeletal Throne. We chose S.T. We will never forget the songs we recorded as Before the Kill, such as “Temple of Possession.”
💀Chris: A lo largo de la historia de la banda han existido cambios en la formación. ¿Cómo han influido esos cambios en la evolución musical y en la manera de trabajar de Skeletal Throne?
☠️Chris: There have been lineup changes throughout the band's history. How have those changes influenced Skeletal Throne's musical evolution and the way you work?
💀Toño: Skeletal Throne ha tenido dos exintegrantes: Ángel Gastelum, quien cantó en los dos primeros discos, Human Deterioration y Barbaric Torment, y Jaime Álvarez, quien fue nuestro baterista durante dos años, si no mal recuerdo. Y ahora S.T. se maneja con músicos de sesión.
☠️Toño: Skeletal Throne has had two former members: Ángel Gastelum, who handled vocals on our first two albums, Human Deterioration and Barbaric Torment, and Jaime Álvarez, who was our drummer for two years, if I remember correctly. Nowadays, S.T. works with session musicians.
💀Chris: Luis Antonio Borjon Gutiérrez se incorporó al bajo en 2021. ¿Qué aportó su llegada al sonido y a la dinámica de la banda?
☠️Chris: Luis Antonio Borjon Gutiérrez joined on bass in 2021. What has his arrival brought to the band's sound and dynamics?
💀Toño: Luis Borjon se unió a Skeletal Throne como miembro oficial en 2021 y sigue vigente. Luis “Boa” es parte fundamental de S.T., ya que es muy buen músico y tiene una mente brillante para aprender rápido las canciones y grabar en el estudio con gran destreza.
☠️Toño: Luis Borjon joined Skeletal Throne as an official member in 2021 and remains with the band today. Luis “Boa” is a fundamental part of S.T. because he is a great musician and has an excellent ability to learn songs quickly and record them in the studio with great skill.
💀Chris: Skeletal Throne nació en Ciudad Obregón, Sonora. ¿Cómo ha sido desarrollar una banda de Death Metal desde esa ciudad y qué desafíos han encontrado al estar alejados de los principales centros de la escena mexicana?
☠️Chris: Skeletal Throne was born in Ciudad Obregón, Sonora. What has it been like developing a Death Metal band from that city, and what challenges have you faced being away from Mexico's main metal centers?
💀Toño: Ciudad Obregón, Sonora, no es sede para el metal, pero nuestro público está en el centro del país y es el verdadero apoyo para nosotros. Seguimos en el camino porque nos gusta esto y daremos más música nueva hasta donde se pueda. Skeletal Throne da frutos y tiene sus fans bien marcados.
☠️Toño: Ciudad Obregón, Sonora, is not a major metal center, but our audience is located in central Mexico and they are our true support. We keep moving forward because we love this, and we will continue releasing new music for as long as we can. Skeletal Throne is bearing fruit and has a very loyal fan base.
💀Chris: México tiene una historia muy importante dentro del Death Metal y del metal extremo. ¿Cómo ven actualmente la escena mexicana y qué bandas de la nueva generación creen que merecen ser escuchadas?
☠️Chris: Mexico has a very important history within Death Metal and extreme metal. How do you see the Mexican scene today, and which newer-generation bands do you think deserve to be heard?
💀Toño: México es violento y sabemos lo que ellos quieren. México tiene mucho metal extremo y grandes discos que tienen que ser escuchados. Por ejemplo, Cathartic, Decortication, Venemous, Warkill, Horrid Sight, Black Brigade, etc.
☠️Toño: Mexico is violent, and we know what people want. Mexico has a lot of extreme metal and many great albums that deserve to be heard. For example: Cathartic, Decortication, Venemous, Warkill, Horrid Sight, Black Brigade, and others.
💀Chris: ¿Cuáles son actualmente las principales influencias musicales de Skeletal Throne? ¿Hay algún álbum o banda que haya tenido una influencia especial en la creación de Perverse?
☠️Chris: What are Skeletal Throne's main musical influences today? Is there any particular album or band that had a special influence on the creation of Perverse?
💀Toño: Totalmente. Por ejemplo: Decapitated – Negation, Blood Red Throne – Souls of Damnation, Malevolent Creation – Eternal y Cannibal Corpse – Bloodthirsty, por mencionar algunos.
☠️Toño: Absolutely. For example: Decapitated – Negation, Blood Red Throne – Souls of Damnation, Malevolent Creation – Eternal, and Cannibal Corpse – Bloodthirsty, just to mention a few.
💀Chris: Para una banda underground, llegar a seguidores de otros países puede ser complicado. ¿Qué importancia han tenido YouTube, Bandcamp, las redes sociales y las plataformas digitales para que la música de Skeletal Throne llegue fuera de México?
☠️Chris: For an underground band, reaching fans in other countries can be difficult. How important have YouTube, Bandcamp, social media, and digital platforms been in helping Skeletal Throne's music reach audiences outside Mexico?
💀Toño: Gracias a las plataformas digitales y al algoritmo hemos llegado a todo el mundo y nos llegan muchos pedidos de mercancía para envíos internacionales. Cada vez que sacamos un álbum nuevo se desencadena la venta y con ese dinero recaudado se hace más mercancía, y así sucesivamente.
☠️Toño: Thanks to digital platforms and their algorithms, we have reached people all over the world, and we receive many orders for international merchandise shipments. Every time we release a new album, sales increase, and the money raised is used to produce more merchandise, and so the cycle continues.
💀Chris: Skeletal Throne tiene una propuesta particularmente ligada al Death Metal. Cuando llevan estas canciones al escenario, ¿qué importancia tiene para ustedes la energía y la interacción con el público?
☠️Chris: Skeletal Throne has a sound strongly rooted in Death Metal. When you bring these songs to the stage, how important are energy and interaction with the audience for you?
💀Toño: Es necesaria la interacción con el público y sonar de lo mejor. Por eso se habla con los músicos de tener buenos instrumentos y el equipo en óptimas condiciones para dar lo mejor y no tener fallas. Hay que dar lo mejor cada vez.
☠️Toño: Interaction with the audience is necessary, as is sounding our best. That's why we make sure the musicians have good instruments and that all the equipment is in optimal condition, so we can give our best and avoid technical problems. You have to give your best every time.
💀Chris: Ahora que Perverse ya está disponible, ¿qué planes tienen para los próximos meses? ¿Habrá nuevos conciertos, material audiovisual, presentaciones fuera de México o algún otro proyecto relacionado con el álbum?
☠️Chris: Now that Perverse is available, what plans do you have for the coming months? Will there be new concerts, audiovisual material, shows outside Mexico, or any other projects related to the album?
💀Toño: Tenemos nuestra primera fecha en el Estado de México, en Brutal Metal Fest, este 21 de noviembre. Presentaremos nuestro nuevo álbum Perverse y dos temas de Human Deterioration y Barbaric Torment. También estaremos en Veracruz Metal Fest en 2027. Seguiremos tocando puertas para más eventos, sacar otros videos oficiales para las redes sociales y lanzar mercancía oficial.
☠️Toño: We have our first date in the State of Mexico at Brutal Metal Fest on November 21. We will present our new album Perverse, along with two songs from Human Deterioration and Barbaric Torment. We will also be playing Veracruz Metal Fest in 2027. We will continue knocking on doors for more shows, release more official videos for social media, and put out official merchandise.
💀Chris: ¿Les gustaría en algún momento realizar una gira por Sudamérica? ¿Y qué significaría para Skeletal Throne poder tocar frente al público de países como Chile, Argentina, Brasil, Perú o Colombia?
☠️Chris: Would you like to tour South America someday? And what would it mean for Skeletal Throne to perform in front of audiences in countries such as Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Peru, or Colombia?
💀Toño: Sería un honor tocar en Chile, ya que es un público muy prendido y metalero. Esperemos que dicte nuestro destino y se pueda concretar una fecha lejos de México y llevar a Skeletal Throne lejos.
☠️Toño: It would be an honor to play in Chile because the audience there is very passionate and very metal-oriented. We hope that destiny allows it to happen and that we can eventually secure a date far from Mexico and take Skeletal Throne to new places.
💀Chris: México y Chile mantienen desde hace décadas una relación de amistad y cercanía entre sus pueblos, y esa conexión también se ha reflejado culturalmente, incluyendo la música. ¿Conocen alguna banda de metal chilena? ¿Hay alguna que les guste o que haya llamado especialmente su atención?
☠️Chris: Mexico and Chile have maintained a close friendship between their peoples for decades, and that connection has also been reflected culturally, including through music. Do you know any Chilean metal bands? Is there one that you particularly like or that has caught your attention?
💀Toño: La banda Force de Chile sorprendió a todos y su estilo ochentero es totalmente bueno. Esperemos verlos algún día.
☠️Toño: The Chilean band Force surprised everyone, and their eighties-style sound is really good. We hope to see them someday.
