CHRIS: Vredehammer began in 2009 as a personal project. In interviews during the early years, you explained that the decision to turn it into a band was mainly connected to the possibility of playing live. After more than fifteen years, do you still see Vredehammer essentially as your personal project, or do you feel that it now has an identity that also belongs to the musicians who have been part of it?

PER: I essentially see it as a personal project since I have pretty much written all of the music, but I have both fond memories, gratitude and respect for all the members that have been part of the Vredehammer journey.

CHRIS: “Under The Dying Sun” was Vredehammer’s first new release after God Slayer, and you have now presented the new single “Vredehammer”. What can you tell us about this new song, and what inspired you when you started writing it?

PER: The new single is me taking a step back to how I initially planned Vredehammer would sound. If you listen to the EP era of Vredehammer (Before we released and full length albums) I was more focused on the “norse sounding” vibe in the music. Actually some of the riffs in the new song appear on our second EP “Pans Skygge” in the song “Betrakteren”. As you can probably hear, there is some difference from the vibe on the Godslayer album and this new track.

CHRIS: The new single is simply called “Vredehammer”. Was using the band’s own name as the title a conscious decision? Does it in some way represent what Vredehammer means to you at this stage?

PER: I had the idea of making a song called Vredehammer for some years, it finally came together when I was writing the lyrics for this last release. And yeah, I guess in some way it represents where I am at this stage, without me being able to go into any deep philosophical reason for it haha.

CHRIS: “Vredehammer” follows “Under The Dying Sun” and seems to show a very aggressive, powerful and groove-driven side of the band while still retaining Vredehammer’s extreme character. Did you approach these new songs differently, or did they develop naturally from the direction you had established with God Slayer?

PER: I wanted to make something that was a little more raw than the Godslayer songs, going more back to the black metal roots, so I consciously stayed away from adding any riffs that sounded TOO commercial, if you know what I mean.

CHRIS: Your relationship with speed as a guitarist is well known. In 2019, Metal Hammer highlighted your ability to play at extreme speeds, and you later spoke about how playing with musicians from Nordjevel pushed you even further in that direction. Today, is speed still a challenge you want to push further, or are you more interested in using it as a tool within a song?

PER: Actually, with the Viperous album I was still very into the fast stuff, but with time I slowly lost interest in making ultra fast songs. These days I am more focused on power and groove than speed. However, if the right riff appears and it happens to be fast, I'll use it of course.

CHRIS: You are once again working with Nils “Dominator” Fjellstrƶm on drums on these new singles. What does Nils bring to Vredehammer’s music that makes him the right musician for this current phase of the band?

PER: What I love about Nils is that he is basically a machine, he can play anything, so I don't have to hold back in any way when writing drum parts. If anything it would be me who was struggling to keep up with him! He also gets what I'm trying to portray with the music, so I don't have to be with him and act like a dictator when he is recording the drums. We have actually never recorded together, he just sends me the raw tracks after recording and I have always been happy with the result.

CHRIS: On “Vredehammer”, you handled the music, lyrics and production. How important is it for you today to maintain that level of control over the creative and production process?

PER: I just find it easier because I know exactly what kind of result I'm looking for. If someone else were to be part of the process, we would waste valuable time discussing this or that. There is no need for that when I already know what I want.

CHRIS: The vocals were recorded in cooperation with Remy-AndrƩ Ƙstrem. What did he contribute to the recording, and how did this collaboration come about?

PER: Remy was super easy to work with, he understood what I needed and provided it without any trouble. He’s also a vocal coach, so he taught me some techniques. I suck at singing, so it was very valuable information haha.

CHRIS: Both “Under The Dying Sun” and “Vredehammer” have been released independently. Is this an approach you intend to maintain for future releases, or would you be open to working with a record label again?

PER: I am open to work with a record label again if they understand my vision and meet my requirements for cooperating, but now when we had the chance I wanted to do a couple of self released singles.

CHRIS: Now that you have released two new songs after God Slayer, are these singles part of a new Vredehammer album, or do you currently prefer to explore the music one release at a time?

¡Haha!

PER: Both new songs were originally meant to be part of a full release, but since we parted ways with our label - I used the opportunity to do the self released singles. I have enough material ready to release a full length album, but I will probably start contacting labels before any full length releases. That stuff is expensive! Haha.

CHRIS: You have also spoken in the past about the importance of bands such as Pantera, Metallica, Dimmu Borgir, Keep of Kalessin and Mayhem at different stages of your development. After so many years of writing music, are you still actively looking for new influences, or are you more interested nowadays in exploring and developing the musical language you have created with Vredehammer?

PER: I'm obviously too old to find any new music interesting. I try, but I fail every time haha. I guess I just sit down with the guitar, and what comes out comes out. The most important thing I try to focus on is avoiding writing stuff that is down right boring. I also think that when a musician has been writing music for more than 25 years, you start developing some kind of “sound” that is hopefully a little recognizable.

CHRIS: Viperous showed another side of Vredehammer, incorporating more synthesizers and a different atmosphere, including influences connected to 1980s horror movies. What were you trying to express musically when you began experimenting with those elements?

PER: I wasn't really trying to express anything besides just writing some cool music. I have always liked that kind of 80's horror synth, so it was a cool addition to the Vredehammer sound.

šŸ’€CHRIS: Con God Slayer parece haber ocurrido otro cambio importante.

CHRIS: With God Slayer, there seems to have been another important change. You explained that you wanted to take a step back from speed and focus more on memorable songs, powerful riffs and punch. Was this a conscious decision to move away from the image of Vredehammer as a band primarily associated with speed?

It seemed to me that many bands were going in the “speed direction”, so I decided to go the opposite way basically.

CHRIS: On God Slayer, you also handled guitars, bass, keyboards and vocals, while Nils “Dominator” Fjellstrƶm recorded the drums. What was it like working with Nils in a context where the music was not solely dependent on the extreme speed that both of you are so well known for?

PER: I think it was a cool change of scenery for Nils where he got the chance to show off his skills in a different soundscape with more focus on power, groove and all that good stuff. He is a very versatile drummer and musician, but is known mostly for his insane speed. For me as well, it was fun to write songs like “The Dragons Burn” which is a pretty slow, but still powerful song.

CHRIS: After working for so many years at the creative core of Vredehammer, which part of the songwriting process is still the most difficult for you: finding a riff, building a complete song, writing the lyrics, or deciding when a song is truly finished?

PER: Good question. As you probably already know - some songs write themselves and can be finished in 30 minutes, while other songs start out as a couple of good riffs, but you truly have to struggle like hell to make it to the end result. It's the exact same with lyrics. If I'm not sure if the song is truly finished, I almost always end up discarding it and picking it back up at a later time.

CHRIS: Your lyrics have drawn inspiration from different sources. On Violator, you mentioned Stephen King, Spawn, as well as stories of revenge, forests and swords. Has your approach to writing lyrics changed over the years? Do you now look for more personal ways of expressing ideas, or do you still prefer building worlds and imagery around the songs?

¡Obviamente necesito empezar a leer mĆ”s libros!

PER: The lyrics for the last two singles were pretty hard to write because this time I didn’t really have any lyrical concepts to use as inspiration. I ended up spending a lot of time on both song and in the end is guess you can say they were written simply by forcing it out of my head. So yes, it’s much easier when you have a concept going. I obviously need to start reading more books!

CHRIS: Vredehammer comes from Mo i Rana in northern Norway. The Norwegian scene has an enormous history within extreme metal, but there is also a big difference between being part of that history and experiencing the scene as a musician today. How do you see the Norwegian underground scene from your current perspective?

PER: I live pretty far from the cities where the black metal history was written, so I was never really part of it. However I was very fascinated by it when I was a younger man, so I definitely get the appeal. As musicians, we don't really talk about that stuff, we just pretty much live normal, boring lives.

šŸ’€CHRIS: Has participado en diferentes bandas y proyectos, incluyendo Elite, Allfader, Abbath y Nordjevel.

CHRIS: You have been involved with different bands and projects, including Elite, Allfader, Abbath and Nordjevel. What did you learn from those experiences that ultimately influenced the way you work with Vredehammer?

PER: The most important thing about playing with different bands and musicians is that you pick up knowledge along the way. I think the most valuable lessons were finding ways to work as efficiently as possible. When you’re younger, you have a lot of hurdles to climb, but with time you learn what works and what doesn’t. Personally I also learned that I prefer to write by myself and to be the one making the decisions.

CHRIS: Your time with Abbath was relatively brief, but it naturally attracted a lot of attention at the time. With the perspective that the years have given you, what did that experience really mean to you as a musician, and what did you learn from it?

PER: It was absolutely an experience. In many ways it was the opportunity I had always dreamed of when I was younger, headlining festivals, meeting your childhood idols, and of course a lot of attention. I am very thankful for the experience, but the strange thing about it was that when I finally had “reached my goals”, I found that it was no longer what I wanted.

Now, it’s way more important to me to be around my family and most important of all, my son. Like I said, very thankful for the experience, but it was an eye opener that gave me perspective on what really matters in life. I no longer find it rewarding to be touring and travelling all the time instead of being present with the ones who mean the most to me.

CHRIS: When you started Vredehammer in 2009, you probably did not imagine that the project would continue for more than fifteen years. If you could talk to the Per who was just starting that project, what advice would you give him?

PER: I would say “give it your all, the sky is the limit!”. I think we all have a role to play, things we have the potential to achieve, and It’s very important to follow your dreams. Then after you have reached your personal goals, you might want to go even further, or you might find yourself content with what you have achieved. Then you find something new to pursue and give THAT your all!

CHRIS: Vredehammer has gone from being essentially a one-man project, to having different line-ups, and later returning to a configuration much more centered around you. Do you think the future of Vredehammer will continue to be flexible in terms of its line-up, or do you now have a more defined idea of how you want the band to operate?

PER: At the moment I am happy with the way things are where I write music and hire session musicians when necessary. At the moment I have no plans or wishes to play live or tour, but who knows - maybe that will change one day. If that day comes, I will cross that bridge when I get there.

CHRIS: After God Slayer and these new singles, do you feel there are still musical territories within Vredehammer that you have not explored, or are you currently more interested in going deeper into the elements that already form part of the band’s identity?

PER: Vredehammer will always sound like Vredehammer in one way or another, but I guess all musicians go through phases, find new inspiration and you never know what might happen. But, for the moment I am mostly inspired by the more “black metal” sound rather than the more modern sounding stuff we’ve done. I am just as curious as you are about hearing what comes next in the future of the band.

CHRIS: After so many years in extreme metal, what still excites you as a musician? Is there any aspect of making music that gives you the same feeling today that it did when you first started?

I love the process, when you write something and suddenly you find the jackpot riff and think “HELL YEAH! This kicks ass!” That is always fun.

CHRIS: From Chile and South America, there is a community of fans who follow European extreme metal very closely, despite the geographical distance that separates us from Norway. What does it mean to you to know that Vredehammer’s music has reached South America?

PER: It’s very cool and highly appreciated!

CHRIS: After more than fifteen years of Vredehammer, what does the name mean to you today? Is it still the same idea you had when you started the project in 2009, or has its meaning changed along with you as a musician?

PER: Vredehammer will always be important to me, it has brought me so many experiences and has enabled me to meet and get to know a lot of awesome people. Today, since I don’t tour or play live, it is more like a hobby and a sanctuary where I can escape from real life and explore the limitless boundaries of creating music and art.

CHRIS: Finally, what can we expect from Per and Vredehammer in this new chapter? Are there any new songs, a possible new album, projects or ideas that you are currently working on that you can share with our readers?

PER: Like I mentioned earlier, there is a lot of finished material and more is being created as we speak. I don’t know when or how the new material will come to life, but one day, maybe soon, maybe later, there will be more Vredehammer songs coming your way.
