Desde Perú, Dämonik continúa construyendo su identidad dentro de la escena extrema latinoamericana. Formada en 2016, la banda ha desarrollado una propuesta que combina elementos del black y death metal, incorporando melodía, técnica y una visión personal tanto en su música como en sus letras.
Con los sencillos “Beneath Your Grace” y “The Antlered”, el grupo presenta una muestra del camino hacia su próximo álbum de estudio.
Chris Fernández conversó con Emily Romero (batería) y Kareliz Almandoz (voz y guitarras), integrantes del trío que completa Ale Miguel (bajo), sobre los orígenes de la banda, sus influencias, la experiencia de compartir escenario con agrupaciones internacionales, los desafíos que enfrentan las mujeres en el metal y el presente de la escena sudamericana.

From Peru, Dämonik continues to build its identity within the Latin American extreme metal scene. Formed in 2016, the band has developed a sound that combines elements of black and death metal, incorporating melody, technicality, and a personal vision into both its music and lyrics.
With the singles “Beneath Your Grace” and “The Antlered,” the band offers a glimpse of the direction leading toward its upcoming studio album.
Chris Fernández spoke with Emily Romero (drums) and Kareliz Almandoz (vocals and guitars), members of the trio completed by Ale Miguel (bass), about the band's origins, their influences, their experiences sharing the stage with international acts, the challenges women face in metal, and the current state of the South American scene.
💀CHRIS: ¿Qué las motivó a formar Dämonik y qué bandas o músicos fueron importantes durante los primeros pasos del proyecto?
💀DÄMONIK — EMILY: Nos motivaba nuestro gusto por la música extrema y las ganas de tocar. También fue importante encontrar mujeres que compartieran ese mismo deseo. No podría señalar una sola banda como influencia inicial, porque nuestros gustos musicales siempre han sido bastante variados.
☠️QUESTION: What motivated you to form Dämonik, and which bands or musicians were important during the project's early days?
☠️DÄMONIK — EMILY: We were motivated by our love of extreme music and our desire to play. Finding women who shared that same drive was also important. I couldn't point to a single band as our initial influence because our musical tastes have always been quite varied.

☠️QUESTION: Which albums or bands have had the greatest impact on the way you understand and compose metal?
☠️DÄMONIK — EMILY: Some of my influences include The Mantle by Agalloch, Leprosy by Death, and Beneath the Remains by Sepultura.
☠️DÄMONIK — KARELIZ: In my case, I would highlight Blackwater Park by Opeth, III: Trauma by Harakiri for the Sky, and The Satanist by Behemoth.

☠️QUESTION: After all these years, what does Dämonik represent to you, and what would you like to leave behind within the Peruvian scene?
☠️DÄMONIK — EMILY: For me, the important thing is to keep making metal and leave a mark on the Peruvian underground scene.
💀CHRIS: ¿Cómo describirían la evolución musical y conceptual de Dämonik desde sus primeros años hasta la formación actual?
💀DÄMONIK — EMILY: La banda ha evolucionado tanto musicalmente como en su concepto. Ahora pensamos más las composiciones, los arreglos y nuestra identidad. Al principio, el sonido era más crudo y directo, más de calle.
☠️QUESTION: How would you describe Dämonik's musical and conceptual evolution from its early years to the current lineup?
☠️DÄMONIK — EMILY: The band has evolved both musically and conceptually. We now put more thought into our compositions, arrangements, and identity. In the beginning, the sound was rawer and more straightforward, with a more street-level approach.
💀CHRIS: Kareliz, ¿cómo surgió la decisión de asumir las voces y qué desafíos encontraste al enfrentarte a ese papel dentro de la banda?
💀DÄMONIK — KARELIZ: La decisión surgió porque no conseguíamos encontrar una vocalista, así que tuve que aprender a cantar. Fue un desafío técnico, porque era algo nuevo para mí.
☠️QUESTION: Kareliz, how did the decision to take over vocals come about, and what challenges did you face when stepping into that role within the band?
☠️DÄMONIK — KARELIZ: The decision came about because we couldn't find a vocalist, so I had to learn how to sing. It was a technical challenge because it was something new to me.

☠️QUESTION: Your recent singles explore personal and emotional subjects. What concepts lie behind “Beneath Your Grace” and “The Antlered”?
☠️DÄMONIK — KARELIZ: Both songs share emotional and psychological themes related to identity and introspection. “Beneath Your Grace” deals with manipulation and the need to escape a vicious cycle. “The Antlered,” on the other hand, is about accepting yourself and learning to embrace what makes you different.
💀CHRIS: ¿Podemos esperar que ambos sencillos formen parte del próximo álbum de Dämonik? ¿Cómo se relacionan con el concepto general del disco?
💀DÄMONIK — EMILY: Sí, ambos sencillos formarán parte del próximo álbum.
☠️QUESTION: Can we expect both singles to appear on Dämonik's upcoming album? How do they relate to the record's overall concept?
☠️DÄMONIK — EMILY: Yes, both singles will be part of the upcoming album.
💀CHRIS: El video de “The Antlered” presenta imágenes que transmiten una sensación de extrañeza y aislamiento. ¿Qué significado tienen esas escenas y el uso de la luz blanca?
💀DÄMONIK — KARELIZ: La idea muestra un recorrido desde un punto A hasta un punto B, mientras los estímulos sociales cotidianos generan una sensación de no encajar. La luz blanca simboliza nuestro interior, esa parte de nosotros mismos que debemos aprender a aceptar y abrazar.
☠️QUESTION: The video for “The Antlered” features imagery that conveys a sense of alienation and isolation. What do these scenes and the use of white light represent?
☠️DÄMONIK — KARELIZ: The idea portrays a journey from point A to point B, while everyday social stimuli create a feeling of not belonging. The white light symbolizes our inner selves, the part of us that we must learn to accept and embrace.
💀CHRIS: Han tenido la oportunidad de compartir escenario con bandas de gran trayectoria internacional, como Arch Enemy y Behemoth. ¿Qué significó esa experiencia para ustedes?
💀DÄMONIK — EMILY: Fue importante porque nos permitió tocar frente a un público más numeroso. El evento no salió exactamente como esperábamos, pero el apoyo de la gente nos ayudó a conectar más con el público.
☠️QUESTION: You have had the opportunity to share the stage with internationally renowned bands such as Arch Enemy and Behemoth. What did that experience mean to you?
☠️DÄMONIK — EMILY: It was important because it allowed us to perform in front of a larger audience. The event didn't go exactly as we had expected, but the audience's support helped us connect with the crowd even more.
💀CHRIS: En 2024 compartieron escenario con Asagraum en Lima. ¿Cómo recuerdan esa presentación y qué significó conocer a otras mujeres que también enfrentan desafíos dentro del metal extremo?
💀DÄMONIK — EMILY: Disfrutamos mucho la oportunidad de conversar sobre los desafíos que enfrentamos como mujeres y sobre lo difícil que puede ser encontrar músicas comprometidas con un proyecto.
💀DÄMONIK — KARELIZ: Para mí fue la primera vez abriendo para una banda internacional. Estaba nerviosa, pero el concierto salió bien y me dejó recuerdos muy agradables.
☠️QUESTION: In 2024, you shared the stage with Asagraum in Lima. How do you remember that performance, and what did it mean to meet other women who also face challenges in extreme metal?
☠️DÄMONIK — EMILY: We really enjoyed the opportunity to talk about the challenges we face as women and how difficult it can be to find female musicians who are committed to a project.
☠️DÄMONIK — KARELIZ: For me, it was my first time opening for an international band. I was nervous, but the show went well and left me with some very pleasant memories.
💀CHRIS: También tuvieron la oportunidad de compartir escenario con Insomnium. ¿Cómo vivieron esa experiencia, tanto desde el punto de vista musical como personal?
💀DÄMONIK — KARELIZ: Me sentí más segura y disfruté mucho poder verlos en vivo.
💀DÄMONIK — EMILY: Insomnium es mi banda favorita desde que era joven, así que cumplir ese sueño fue algo muy especial. Además, tuve la oportunidad de conocerlos.
☠️QUESTION: You also had the opportunity to share the stage with Insomnium. How did you experience that occasion, both musically and personally?
☠️DÄMONIK — KARELIZ: I felt more confident and really enjoyed being able to see them perform live.
☠️DÄMONIK — EMILY: Insomnium has been my favorite band since I was young, so fulfilling that dream was something very special. I also had the opportunity to meet them.
💀CHRIS: ¿Han tenido que enfrentarse a prejuicios o situaciones de discriminación por ser mujeres dentro de una escena musical que históricamente ha estado dominada por hombres?
💀DÄMONIK — EMILY: Las mujeres somos juzgadas injustamente, tanto por nuestras habilidades como por nuestra apariencia. Algunos organizadores nos veían como un atractivo para convocar público, en lugar de tomarnos en serio como banda. Con el tiempo, hemos tenido que ganarnos el respeto.
💀DÄMONIK — KARELIZ: Las mujeres que participamos en la música, especialmente cuando tocamos instrumentos, enfrentamos dobles estándares. A veces se nos juzga de una manera diferente a los hombres.
☠️QUESTION: Have you faced prejudice or discrimination as women in a music scene that has historically been dominated by men?
☠️DÄMONIK — EMILY: Women are judged unfairly, both for our abilities and our appearance. Some promoters saw us as a way to attract an audience rather than taking us seriously as a band. Over time, we have had to earn their respect.
☠️DÄMONIK — KARELIZ: Women who participate in music, especially those who play instruments, face double standards. Sometimes we are judged differently from men.
💀CHRIS: En los últimos años ha aumentado la presencia de mujeres en las bandas de metal. ¿Cómo ven este crecimiento y qué les dirían a quienes quieren comenzar un proyecto dentro de la escena extrema?
💀DÄMONIK — KARELIZ: Les diría que perseveren y no abandonen sus objetivos. Las mujeres somos tan capaces como los hombres de hacer música y desarrollar nuestras habilidades.
💀DÄMONIK — EMILY: Me entusiasma ver a más mujeres en la escena, aunque también me preocupa que pueda tratarse de una tendencia pasajera. Mantener un proyecto y seguir adelante requiere años de trabajo y perseverancia.
☠️QUESTION: In recent years, the presence of women in metal bands has increased. How do you view this growth, and what would you say to women who want to start a project within the extreme metal scene?
☠️DÄMONIK — KARELIZ: I would tell them to persevere and not give up on their goals. Women are just as capable as men of making music and developing their skills.
☠️DÄMONIK — EMILY: I'm excited to see more women in the scene, although I'm also concerned that it could be a passing trend. Keeping a project alive and moving forward requires years of work and perseverance.
💀CHRIS: Bandas como Crypta y Nervosa han conseguido ampliar su presencia internacional. ¿Les gustaría seguir un camino similar y llevar la música de Dämonik a escenarios europeos?
💀DÄMONIK — EMILY: Hacer una gira por Europa es una meta a medio plazo. Sabemos que llegar a ese punto requiere mucho trabajo y una base sólida. Queremos seguir avanzando y conseguir que nuestra música llegue a otros países.
☠️QUESTION: Bands such as Crypta and Nervosa have expanded their international presence. Would you like to follow a similar path and bring Dämonik's music to European stages?
☠️DÄMONIK — EMILY: Touring Europe is a medium-term goal. We know that reaching that point requires a lot of work and a solid foundation. We want to keep moving forward and bring our music to other countries.
💀CHRIS: ¿Conocen bandas de la escena metalera chilena? ¿Hay alguna con la que les gustaría compartir escenario en el futuro?
💀DÄMONIK — EMILY: Vi a Rotten Tomb en Lima y me gustan mucho. También me gustaría compartir escenario con Insanity Storm.
☠️QUESTION: Are you familiar with bands from the Chilean metal scene? Is there any band you would like to share the stage with in the future?
☠️DÄMONIK — EMILY: I saw Rotten Tomb in Lima and really like them. I would also like to share the stage with Insanity Storm.
💀CHRIS: Desde su experiencia, ¿cómo ven el desarrollo de la escena metalera latinoamericana? ¿Qué aspectos consideran que todavía necesitan mejorar para alcanzar una mayor proyección internacional?
💀DÄMONIK — KARELIZ: Chile y Argentina tienen una buena disposición para colaborar y recibir a otras bandas. Sin embargo, todavía necesitamos consolidar más nuestra escena.
💀DÄMONIK — EMILY: He notado que las bandas europeas suelen convocar públicos mucho más numerosos que las sudamericanas. Creo que todavía tenemos trabajo por delante para conseguir una mayor visibilidad.
☠️QUESTION: From your experience, how do you view the development of the Latin American metal scene? What aspects do you think still need to improve in order to achieve greater international recognition?
☠️DÄMONIK — KARELIZ: Chile and Argentina have a good attitude toward collaboration and welcoming other bands. However, we still need to strengthen our scene further.
☠️DÄMONIK — EMILY: I've noticed that European bands tend to draw much larger audiences than South American bands. I think we still have work to do to achieve greater visibility.
💀CHRIS: Con el próximo álbum cada vez más cerca, ¿qué planes tiene Dämonik para los próximos meses? ¿Podemos esperar nuevas presentaciones en vivo?
💀DÄMONIK — EMILY: El álbum está prácticamente listo y estamos cerca de su lanzamiento. Por el momento, no tenemos conciertos programados hasta nuevo aviso.
☠️QUESTION: With the upcoming album getting closer, what plans does Dämonik have for the coming months? Can we expect any live performances?
☠️DÄMONIK — EMILY: The album is almost ready, and we are getting closer to its release. For now, we have no concerts scheduled until further notice.
💀CHRIS: Para finalizar, ¿qué mensaje les gustaría dejar a quienes siguen a Dämonik y a los seguidores del metal extremo de Chile y Latinoamérica?
💀DÄMONIK — KARELIZ: Espero que quienes escuchen nuestra música puedan encontrar energía, experimentar nuevas sensaciones y disfrutarla.
💀DÄMONIK — EMILY: Denle una oportunidad a las bandas sudamericanas y recomienden su música. Dämonik ofrece un black/death metal técnico y melódico, y creo que nuestras producciones no tienen nada que envidiarles a las europeas.
☠️QUESTION: Finally, what message would you like to share with Dämonik's followers and extreme metal fans in Chile and throughout Latin America?
☠️DÄMONIK — KARELIZ: I hope that people who listen to our music can find energy, experience new feelings, and enjoy it.
☠️DÄMONIK — EMILY: Give South American bands a chance and recommend their music. Dämonik offers technical and melodic black/death metal, and I believe our productions have nothing to envy in European releases.
