☠️CHRIS: To begin, we would like you to introduce Projector to the readers of Metal Fans and tell us who currently makes up the band and what Projector represents to you at this stage.
☠️RODRIGO: Hello everyone, my name is Rodrigo Bocaz, guitarist and founder of Projector. The band currently consists of Ivón Sepúlveda on bass, Rodrigo Salazar on vocals, Esteban Ponce on drums, Ignacio Yáñez on guitar, and myself. At this point, the band represents the consolidation of this lineup and the opportunity to show the world the work we have been focused on for such a long time.
☠️CHRIS: Projector was founded in 2008. How did the band originally come together, and what motivated you to start this project?
☠️RODRIGO: Actually, the idea originally started with a sound closer to Sentenced, since at that time I was playing in another death metal band. But once I left that band, I put all my energy into this project and decided to focus on the style I liked the most.
During the early years, it was just Camilo Gómez on drums and me, and we always wanted to do everything as professionally as possible within our limited possibilities and resources. However, the constant changes in the lineup slowed that progress down. Eventually, Camilo had to leave for personal reasons, and I was left alone with the same idea in mind. From that point onward, it has simply been about continuing to fight for the band.
☠️RODRIGO: Han cambiado varias cosas...
☠️CHRIS: A lot of time has passed since those early years. How would you describe Projector's evolution, both musically and in the way you understand the band today?
☠️RODRIGO: A lot of things have changed... first of all, the members, haha! But musically, there is a clear sense of maturity and a better understanding of the bigger picture. Looking at the band in the most professional way possible forces you to work differently and adapt. Sometimes it can be difficult and thankless, but when you have the compositions ready and share them with people at shows, it makes everything worthwhile.
☠️CHRIS: Between the Nature and Ego marked an important moment in Projector's career. Looking back at the album with the perspective that the years have given you, what does it mean to you today?
☠️RODRIGO: It may sound a little selfish, but only Ivón and I remain from that lineup. Since it was our debut album and my first experience in a professional studio, it represents a milestone that I am deeply proud of, especially knowing that I wrote those songs almost at the same time I was learning how to play. I prefer to leave it as a reflection of its time without changing anything. That said, with today's perspective, it is inevitable to think, “I could have tried this, or arranged that differently.”
☠️CHRIS: Entre ese primer larga duración y Before the Last Light existe un período bastante extenso.
☠️CHRIS: There is a considerable period of time between your first full-length and Before the Last Light. What happened during those years, and what factors made the second album take so long to complete?
☠️RODRIGO: It was mainly due to the lineup changes. I didn't want to write or go into the studio with people who weren't committed, only for the same thing that happened with the first album to happen again. Even so, in 2019 we released the single “Corporatocracy” to have some fresh material and put ourselves to the test as a lineup.
However, the social uprising and then the pandemic happened, which greatly delayed our schedule, as well as the availability of our producer, Erick Martínez, and the studio. But it was never because we lacked the desire to work or because we had nothing to show.
☠️CHRIS: Projector has maintained its roots in melodic death metal, but you have also spoken about a natural evolution in your sound. What elements do you feel have changed the most in the band's music over the years?
☠️RODRIGO: Nowadays there are more textures and influences, particularly from doom metal, with bands such as Paradise Lost, Swallow the Sun, Katatonia and Sentenced as references. I've tried to incorporate all of those elements, and the fact that Rodrigo Salazar is also the vocalist of his doom band, Opus VII, helps us develop them in a very natural way.
☠️CHRIS: La formación actual incorpora nuevos integrantes.
☠️CHRIS: The current lineup includes new members. What musical and creative contributions have they brought to Projector's current identity?
☠️RODRIGO: Each member managed to bring their own identity to this work, which greatly enriched the final result. In Ignacio Yáñez's case, our guitarist joined the band after the album had already been recorded, during the stage when Felipe Pradenas was playing with us.
Even so, Ignacio's arrival brought a fresh energy to our live shows, adding his own character and a renewed vibe, especially when it comes to the solos. He has been an excellent addition, so there will be much more of his contribution on the next material.
☠️CHRIS: In April this year, you had the opportunity to share the stage with In Flames at Teatro Cariola. How did that opportunity come about, and what did it mean for Projector to perform in front of an audience like that?
☠️RODRIGO: The opportunity came about because we always keep our EPKs updated and constantly send them to promoters along with the appropriate contact email. It turned out that we were a good fit for the opening slot, and fortunately everything worked out.
It was extremely important for us. In Flames is one of our main influences, especially their early albums. Personally, they are one of my all-time favorite bands, so for me it was a dream come true.
☠️CHRIS: Ahora llegamos a Before the Last Light, su segundo larga duración.
☠️CHRIS: Now we come to Before the Last Light, your second full-length album. What does this record represent within Projector's history, and what is the main difference you see compared to your first album?
☠️RODRIGO: It represents a key milestone in our history, mainly because it consolidates a stable lineup. Having a producer involved throughout the entire process made a huge difference and represented an enormous learning experience for the band.
That is why there are so many different nuances compared to our debut, reflected in much more mature songwriting and a significant step forward in the production. We are truly happy with the final result.
☠️CHRIS: The album features ten songs and brings back “Corporatocracy” as a bonus track. Why did you decide to include this song again, and what does it mean within the context of the new record?
☠️RODRIGO: “Corporatocracy” was originally intended to be part of the album, but at the time we decided to release it as a digital single, and it remained that way for quite some time. Since it is one of our favorite songs, when we structured this new album, we wanted to officially include it on the physical edition.
Also, within the conceptual context of the album, it works as a prequel to the song “Kakistocracy,” which is part of this new release.
☠️CHRIS: The first single, “Living Resources,” deals with a highly critical idea about how human beings can end up being reduced to a resource within society. What led you to explore this idea, and what place do social themes have in Projector's lyrics?
☠️RODRIGO: In particular, the idea behind “Living Resources” comes from everyday life: seeing how life is becoming increasingly precarious and how people end up being treated as disposable resources —even more so today with the emergence of AI— while the humanity behind each individual is pushed aside.
In general, social issues have always been fundamental to us, both on the first album and on this one. Perhaps we approach them a little more directly now, because everyday life and the global context seem increasingly difficult and dark.
☠️CHRIS: Before the Last Light also features guest appearances by Cinthia Santibáñez of Crisálida and Rodrigo Alpe of Recrucide. How did these collaborations come about, and what did you want them to bring to the sound of the album?
☠️RODRIGO: The most direct answer is that Cinthia is my singing teacher and Rodrigo is my guitar teacher. Rodrigo had also joined us years ago for several shows when we were left without a guitarist.
They are both great friends and teachers. For this album, I wanted to have collaborations with people I deeply admire, both musically and personally. So I am very happy with the result; having them involved fills us with pride.
☠️CHRIS: What was the composition, recording and production process like for Before the Last Light with Erick Martínez? Was there any significant difference compared to the way you approached your previous productions?
☠️RODRIGO: As far as the songwriting is concerned, the process mainly involved me putting together the initial demos, which we then reviewed and developed together. After that, we worked on the pre-production with Erick to further refine and define the sound we were looking for.
Since I had already worked with him on the first album, he was the natural choice. Erick is also a great friend, so the whole process flowed really well. The main difference compared to our previous experiences was everything we had learned along the way, which helped us approach this record in a much more professional manner.
☠️CHRIS: After so many years of activity and with a new album about to be released, how do you see Projector within the Chilean metal scene today, and what do you think you still have left to explore musically?
☠️RODRIGO: We still see ourselves opening doors and making our way forward, trying to establish a style that usually does not receive much visibility in Chile. Musically, we know there is always a lot left to explore, while never compromising the essence or the core that defines Projector's identity.
¡Saludos!
☠️CHRIS: Finally, what are Projector's plans for the coming months after the release of Before the Last Light, and what do you hope people will find when they listen to the complete album?
☠️RODRIGO: We want to play as much as possible and showcase our work. Hopefully, we will be able to go abroad and take our music as far as possible. We hope this album will resonate with people, both musically and lyrically.
Thank you very much for the interview and for your interest in our work.
Best regards!
