ENTREVISTA A TYRANT: "EMERGO ES EL ÁLBUM MÁS CORTO, DIRECTO, VULNERABLE Y HONESTO QUE HEMOS HECHO"

Emergo es el nuevo álbum de TYRANT, una banda de Heavy Metal originaria de Michigan, Estados Unidos. Con este nuevo trabajo, la banda presenta una propuesta que reúne diferentes influencias y estilos dentro del metal, construyendo un sonido propio que, como ellos mismos explican en esta entrevista, no busca encajar en una etiqueta específica.

Tras publicar nuestra reseña de Emergo, donde destacamos la presencia de elementos del US Power Metal y el Traditional Heavy Metal, además de otras influencias, tuvimos la oportunidad de conversar con Philip Winters, vocalista de TYRANT, quien nos cuenta más sobre el proceso creativo detrás del álbum, su significado, sus influencias musicales y la evolución de la banda.

En esta entrevista también hablamos sobre canciones como "Into the Light" y "World Anew", la colaboración con el guitarrista Sebastian "Spyder" Silva en "Righteous", la particular clasificación de la banda dentro de la escena del metal y sus planes para el futuro. TYRANT también nos cuenta que les encantaría realizar una gira por Sudamérica, invitando a los fans latinoamericanos interesados en verlos en directo a contactar con los promotores locales para hacer posible su llegada a esta parte del mundo.

METAL FANS: Para comenzar, ¿cómo están? ¿Cómo ha sido hasta ahora la reacción de los fans y de la prensa ante Emergo desde su lanzamiento?

First of all, how are you guys doing? How has the reaction from fans and the press been so far to Emergo since its release?

TYRANT: ¡Estamos bien! Estamos muy contentos de que el nuevo álbum finalmente haya salido. La reacción hasta ahora ha sido realmente muy buena y nos sentimos muy humildes por ello. No estábamos del todo seguros de lo que la gente pensaría de este nuevo álbum, ya que es bastante diferente, pero parece que mucha gente se está sintiendo atraída por él.

TYRANT: We are doing well! Glad to have the new album finally out. The reaction has been really great and humbling so far. We weren’t quite sure what people would think of this new album being so different but it seems like a lot of people are gravitating towards it.

METAL FANS: Para quienes están descubriendo TYRANT por primera vez, ¿cómo describirían a la banda y su identidad musical con sus propias palabras?

For those who are discovering TYRANT for the first time, how would you describe the band and your musical identity in your own words?

TYRANT: Generalmente nos clasificamos como "Heavy Metal", pero es un poco difícil para nosotros ponerle una etiqueta específica. Hacemos la música que nos gusta y que nosotros mismos queremos escuchar.

TYRANT: We generally classify ourselves as ‘heavy metal’ but it’s kind of hard for us to put a specific label on it. We make music that we like and want to hear.

METAL FANS: Al escuchar Emergo, encontré elementos que me hicieron pensar en la tradición del US Power Metal y en bandas como Sanctuary y Nevermore, pero también encontré una fuerte presencia del Traditional Heavy Metal. ¿Cuáles han sido las principales influencias musicales de TYRANT?

When listening to Emergo, I found elements that made me think of the tradition of US Power Metal and bands such as Sanctuary and Nevermore, but I also found a strong presence of Traditional Heavy Metal. What have been the main musical influences on TYRANT?

TYRANT: Todas nuestras influencias están repartidas por todas partes. Todos los integrantes de la banda compartimos el amor por el metal, pero cada uno tiene sus propios gustos. En mi caso (Philip), algunas de mis bandas de metal favoritas actualmente son Bleed From Within, Gojira y Unto Others.

TYRANT: All of our influences are all over the place. Everyone in the band has a shared love of metal but each with our own tastes. For me (Philip) some of my favorite metal bands today are Bleed From Within, Gojira and Unto Others.

METAL FANS: Emergo tiene una atmósfera muy distintiva y una identidad propia. ¿Cómo fue el proceso creativo detrás del álbum? ¿Tenían una visión o un concepto específico en mente cuando comenzaron a escribir las canciones?

Emergo has a very distinctive atmosphere and its own identity. What was the creative process behind the album like? Did you have a specific vision or concept in mind when you began writing the songs?

TYRANT: No teníamos una visión o un concepto específico al comenzar a hacer este álbum, más allá de intentar crear música que nos entusiasmara y que sintiéramos auténtica para nosotros. Sin embargo, compartimos algunas de las demos de las canciones con uno de nuestros amigos y él describió la música como "nature metal", lo que tenía mucho sentido en ese contexto y nos ayudó a presentar el álbum de una manera más cohesiva.

TYRANT: We didn’t have a specific vision or concept going into making this album other than trying to make music we were excited about and felt authentic to us. However, we shared some of the song demos with one of our friends and he described the music as ‘nature metal’ which made a lot of sense in context and helped us package the album more cohesively.

METAL FANS: ¿Cuál es el significado detrás del título Emergo? ¿Qué representa este concepto para la banda?

What is the meaning behind the title Emergo? What does this concept represent for the band?

TYRANT: "Emergo" se traduce del latín como "Yo emerjo". Proviene del lema del escudo de armas de la familia Winters (Philip y Andrew), y pensamos que era el momento perfecto para utilizarlo como título del álbum. Es un lema de empoderamiento personal y de seguir avanzando sin importar lo que suceda en la vida.

TYRANT: ‘Emergo’ translates from Latin to ‘I, Emerge’. It comes from the Winters’ (Philip & Andrew) family crest motto and we thought it was the perfect time to use it as an album title. It’s a motto of self-empowerment and striving forward no matter what happens in life.

METAL FANS: Una canción que particularmente llamó mi atención fue "Into the Light", que tiene una atmósfera más oscura y melancólica en comparación con algunas de las otras canciones del álbum. ¿Podrían contarnos un poco más sobre la historia o inspiración detrás de esta canción?

One song that particularly caught my attention was "Into the Light", which has a darker and more melancholic atmosphere compared to some of the other songs on the album. Could you tell us a little more about the story or inspiration behind this song?

TYRANT: El concepto principal detrás de "Into the Light" es la idea de las almas gemelas y de encontrarse una y otra vez en cada vida, durante toda la eternidad. El alma gemela actúa como una guía a través del más allá y hacia una nueva vida, donde ambos vuelven a encontrarse.

TYRANT: The main concept surrounding Into The Light, is the idea of soul-mates and finding each other in every lifetime over and over again for eternity. The soul-mate acting as an usher through the afterlife and into a new life, where they find each other again.

METAL FANS: Otra canción que realmente llamó mi atención fue "World Anew". ¿Qué pueden contarnos sobre el significado de esta canción y el lugar que ocupa dentro del concepto general del álbum?

Another song that really caught my attention was "World Anew". What can you tell us about the meaning behind this song and the place it holds within the overall concept of the album?

TYRANT: El concepto lírico de "World Anew" surgió de Andrew (el baterista), ya que quería escribir realmente una canción sobre aprovechar cada uno de los días que tenemos en este planeta, como si cada día fuera una página en blanco para comenzar de nuevo. Creo que, dentro del panorama general del álbum, probablemente sea la canción que más se relaciona con lo que "Emergo" significa para nosotros: aprovechar cada día como si fuera una nueva oportunidad para hacer algo grandioso.

TYRANT: World Anew’s lyrical concept came from Andrew (the drummer) as he wanted to really write a song about taking advantage of every single day we have on this planet, as if it were a clean slate to start anew. I think within the grand scheme of the album it is probably the song most in line with what ‘Emergo’ means to us; seizing every day as if it were a new opportunity to be great.

METAL FANS: ¿Cómo abordan el equilibrio entre riffs poderosos, el trabajo melódico de las guitarras y las líneas vocales durante el proceso de composición?

How do you approach balancing powerful riffs, melodic guitar work, and vocal lines during the songwriting process?

TYRANT: Muchas veces, las canciones comienzan con un riff de guitarra o con una frase lírica o melodía que actúa como el motivo principal de la canción, y luego intentamos desarrollar el tema alrededor de eso. Lo principal para nosotros es intentar que cada canción se sienta fluida dentro de sí misma y que pase naturalmente de una parte a otra sin volverse repetitiva o perder interés.

TYRANT: A lot of the times, songs start with either a guitar riff or a lyrical phrase / melody that kind of acts as the main motif of the song, and then we try to develop the song around that. Our main thing is trying to make each song feel seamless within itself and like it flows naturally from one part to the next without getting stale.

METAL FANS: ¿Qué diferencia a Emergo de sus lanzamientos anteriores? ¿Sienten que TYRANT ha evolucionado musicalmente con este nuevo álbum?

What sets Emergo apart from your previous releases? Do you feel that TYRANT has evolved musically with this new album?

TYRANT: Emergo es definitivamente el álbum más corto, directo y vulnerable/auténtico que hemos hecho. Sentimos que es un paso en la dirección correcta para nosotros, porque no estamos intentando imitar a ninguna banda en particular ni suscribirnos a ningún género, sino que estamos siendo honestos con nosotros mismos respecto a la música que queremos hacer, sin preocuparnos por cómo será percibida.

TYRANT: Emergo is definitely the shortest, leanest and most vulnerable / honest album we have ever done. It feels like a step in the right direction for us because we are not trying to imitate any one band or subscribe to any genre, but we are being honest with ourselves in the music we want to make without being worried about how it will be perceived.

METAL FANS: Hemos visto que algunos medios han clasificado la música de TYRANT, y particularmente Emergo, como Thrash Metal. Sin embargo, personalmente, escucho una fuerte presencia de US Power Metal y Traditional Heavy Metal en el álbum, junto con otros elementos. ¿Cómo definirían ustedes el estilo musical de TYRANT? ¿Se identifican con la etiqueta Thrash Metal o sienten que su música pertenece a una combinación diferente de estilos?

We have seen some media outlets classify TYRANT's music, and particularly Emergo, as Thrash Metal. However, personally, I hear a strong presence of US Power Metal and Traditional Heavy Metal in the album, along with other elements. How would you define TYRANT's musical style? Do you identify with the Thrash Metal label, or do you feel that your music belongs to a different combination of styles?

TYRANT: No creo que seamos una "banda de Thrash", o al menos no lo hemos sido durante mucho tiempo. No estoy del todo seguro de cómo surgió la etiqueta de "Thrash" para Emergo.

Nuestra música es una amalgama de todo tipo de música que escuchamos, presentada desde la perspectiva de una banda de metal.

TYRANT: I do not think we’re a ‘thrash band’ or at least haven’t been for a very long time. I am not quite sure how the ’thrash’ label came about for Emergo.

Our music is an amalgamation of all types of music we listen to presented as a metal band.

METAL FANS: El Heavy Metal y el US Power Metal tienen una historia muy importante dentro de la música estadounidense. ¿Cómo ven actualmente la escena del Heavy Metal y Power Metal en Estados Unidos? ¿Creen que existe una nueva generación de bandas que mantiene viva esta tradición y dónde sienten que encaja TYRANT dentro de esta escena?

Heavy Metal and US Power Metal have a very important history within American music. How do you see the Heavy Metal and Power Metal scene in the United States today? Do you think there is a new generation of bands keeping this tradition alive, and where do you feel TYRANT fits within this scene?

TYRANT: Creo que Estados Unidos ha sido una incubadora de muchas bandas realmente grandes e innovadoras durante los últimos 20 años o más. Bandas como Lamb of God, Trivium, Mastodon, etc., han creado su propio espacio y han hecho música refrescante.

Creo que se trata menos de mantener viva la tradición y más de impulsar el género hacia adelante y aportar un estilo y un sabor únicos al metal en general, que es donde creo que nosotros encajamos. Intentamos darle nuestro propio giro al metal, sin tratar de copiar a nadie ni ser una imitación de otra banda.

TYRANT: I think the US has been an incubator for a lot of really great and innovative bands within the last 20+ years. Bands like Lamb of God, Trivium, Mastodon, etc all have carved out their own niche and made refreshing music.

I think it less about keeping the tradition alive, but rather pushing the genre forward and bringing a unique flavor and style to metal as a whole, which is where I think we fit it. We attempt to put our own spin on metal without trying to copy anyone or be a rip off of another band.

METAL FANS: ¿Cómo surgió la colaboración con Sebastian "Spyder" Silva en la canción "Righteous" y qué aportó él al tema?

How did the collaboration with Sebastian "Spyder" Silva on the song "Righteous" come about, and what did he bring to the song?

TYRANT: Hablamos con Sebastian sobre la posibilidad de que hiciera un solo como invitado y a él le entusiasmó mucho la idea. Cuando hablamos sobre el solo, le dimos algunos fragmentos de un par de canciones diferentes y él eligió la parte final de "Righteous", que parecía encajar de manera natural. Es un guitarrista fantástico y puede tocar prácticamente cualquier cosa.

TYRANT: We chatted with Sebastian about the idea of potentially doing a guest solo and he was really keen on the idea. When discussing the solo idea, we gave him a few passages from a couple different songs and he picked the ending of ‘Righteous’ which seemed like a natural fit. He’s a fantastic guitarist and can play just about anything.

METAL FANS: ¿Cuáles son los planes de TYRANT para el resto de 2026? ¿Están preparando conciertos o una gira para promocionar Emergo?

What are TYRANT's plans for the rest of 2026? Are you planning any live shows or a tour to promote Emergo?

TYRANT: Estamos planeando algunos grandes conciertos en nuestro estado natal, Michigan, para finales de este año, y después haremos una intensa gira en 2027 para promocionar el nuevo álbum. Nos gustaría llegar a Canadá, México y Europa durante este próximo ciclo de gira.

TYRANT: We are planning some big home state (Michigan) shows for later this year and then tour hard in 2027 to promote the new album. We would like to get to Canada, Mexico and Europe on this next tour cycle.

METAL FANS: Desde Chile y Latinoamérica, en Metal Fans Inc. seguimos y promovemos música de bandas de todo el mundo, incluyendo, por supuesto, la escena estadounidense de Heavy Metal. From Chile and Latin America, at Metal Fans Inc. we follow and promote music from bands from all over the world, including, of course, the American Heavy Metal scene. If TYRANT ever had the opportunity to tour South America, would you like to visit this part of the world and play for Latin American fans? And what message would you like to send to those who are discovering the band and listening to Emergo for the first time?

TYRANT: Sí, creo que sería absolutamente increíble hacer una gira por Sudamérica. Si estás en Sudamérica, disfrutas de nuestra música y quieres ver a la banda tocar en directo, dile a los promotores locales que quieren que vayamos a tocar y nosotros haremos que suceda.

TYRANT: Yeah, I think it would be an absolute blast to go to South America for tour. If you’re in South America and you enjoy our music and want to see the band perform live, tell your local promoters you want us to come perform and we will make it happen.

METAL FANS: Finalmente, ¿qué les gustaría decirles a todos los fans que han apoyado a TYRANT a lo largo de los años y qué podemos esperar de la banda en el futuro?

Finally, what would you like to say to all the fans who have supported TYRANT throughout the years, and what can we expect from the band in the future?

TYRANT: A todos los que han escuchado nuestra música, visto nuestros videos musicales o nos han visto tocar en directo, gracias. Estaremos lanzando mucha más música y haciendo todavía más giras en el futuro. ¿Quizás incluso un nuevo lanzamiento para finales de 2027?

TYRANT: To anyone who has listened to our music, watched our music videos or seen us live in concert, thank you. We will be releasing a lot more music and doing even more tours in the future. Maybe even a new release by the end of 2027?
